Do Unto Others-A Biblical Lesson On Civil Rights, QAF-style

What is the key issue at stake with marriage equality? It's love, and do unto others as you want others to do unto you. And the all encompassing love of God. Using religion in this is ludicrous, since the Bible clearly states that man is created in his image. And that really, as a nation, we need to move past using the Bible as a valid source of fact in political issues. Because the Bible isn't scientific or even solid in its arguing. It isn't based on facts. It's based on beliefs. And beliefs are not objective, but subjective.

And it's about dragging the US out of the backwards movements that refuses to release its hold and let this country truly step out into the twenty-first century.

We give you bitchesofbritin's lecture on civil rights, biblical interpretation and modern day Pharisees, with illustrations of Love, Family, Friendship, Partnership and Marriage.

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

When looking at the Bible and those that use it as an offensive weapon, I am reminded of the Pharisees who came to Jesus hoping to trap him into contradicting the law of Moses. Mormons, fundamentalist evanglical Christians (modern day Pharasiees) may wish to remember what the law is based on, and how the Bible was interprested and written.
Pharisee: 1. a member of a Jewish sect that flourished during the 1st century b.c. and 1st century a.d. and that differed from the Sadducees chiefly in its strict observance of religious ceremonies and practices, adherence to oral laws and traditions, and belief in an afterlife and the coming of a Messiah.
2. (lowercase) a sanctimonious, self-righteous, or hypocritical person.

One of the Pharisees tested Jesus with a question, "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" (Matthew 22:36 NIV). Jesus replied, " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments" (Matthew 22:37-40 NIV).

The Pharisees tried to trick Jesus, but he was onto them. It is not strict observance to the letter of the law, it is your loving spirit, your love for your fellow man-- that which asks you do you have a right relationship with God based on love and trust, as well as a right relationship with your fellow man or neighbor, this is the greatest commandment.

The thing is, and historians agree, when the New Testament speaks of homosexuality being wrong, it is not talking about homosexuality per se. The exact translation from the Greek is for pederasty, or not having catamites or young boys as sex slaves. THAT is what the New Testament is referring to. The reason homosexuals were often classified as child sexual predators is from early Christian interpretation. And, the religious right is still clinging to false interpretations. (There is even extensive arguement that homosexuality or even pederasty was what Paul was talking about, due to the choice of Greek words he used, he may have been talking about softnest of fortitude and not sexuality, AT ALL.)

Is he a sinner or a saint? Is he merely an misanthropic asshole, or a damaged beautiful man desperately in need of someone who sees through his bullshit to his soul ~~Justin~~.

Brian Kinney is the quissential romantic hero. He is a loner, damaged and wary of people, cynical and melancholy. He is outside the circle, an outcast who is introspective and flawed. There is an agreement between Brian and Justin. We see it for the first time in 101, in the form of a public service announcement. While cute, it brought a very important issue, especially in the gay community, to the fore, and would become especially important in the next season.

Sexual safety.

The flip side of this is commonly known as 'barebacking', or 'fucking raw." At one time, no one cared about this. The worse thing that could happen to you was something that a shot of penicillin would cure. This is not the case in the world that Brian and Justin live in. Creating a super hero takes courage, fortitude a
message and well great hair, rippling muscles and hot gay sex....come
on, isn't that what all great comics should have? Oh maybe not, but
in the land of Gayopolis where Rage saves the day and JT saves Rage's
heart the hot gay sex is as integral to the story of who they are and
why they fight another day.

Here is a rare glimpse of how Rage was conceived by the producers and
writers of QAF.

This comic was issued between seasons 2 and 3, as a bit of a tide over, perhaps designed to deflect the angst of what was coming. The comic is becoming rare, but can still be found on eBay, as vl_redreign can attest. For those who have never seen it, you're in for a treat!

Why is Emmett so Beloved?

The extremely smart and perceptive gmta_nz asked me a question in my personal journal post about Emmett.
Fire, is there anyone, any fan who doesn't love Emmett? If you think about it, ALL the other QAF characters have someone who hates, dislikes, feels conflicted about or is at least indifferent to them. But I never heard of anyone not adoring Emmett. Why?

This was my response to her.

I think Emmett is beloved universally due to a couple of different factors.
1, Peter Paige is a simply fabulous actor who gave Em heart, guts, balls, flame and a sense of honor that a marine would envy.

2, Em's complete honesty and complete lack of self loathing.

3, That Em is portrayed so beautifully complete. I know the straightest most alpha macho straight guys who think Em is completely fabulous, funny and wonderful.

4, Em was not a romantic interest for Brian so he never splits the female audiance

I have to latch on your no.4, which is perfectly true (like all the other points), but it leads me to wonder if the fans are implicitly doing what the audience of the "Queer Guy" was doing, at least according to Brian: desexualize Emmett.

Today, I've heard a lot about his courage, style, fabulousness, ability to love, etc., but not nearly as much about how bloody sexy and gorgeous he is. Hello everyone,

First let us say that we hope that this past holiday season was a joyous one for one and all on our flist. Fandom wise, it is our wish the the coming year continues to attract new fans but keep our old ones as well. And just to let you all know, we have lots of projects in the works for this journal. So stay tuned....please.

Queer as Folk, "There's nought {colloquially pronounced 'nowt'} so queer as folk." We are all different. We come from different walks of life, countries, sexual orientations, and yet, we all fell in love with a show called Queer as Folk. Why is that? Why did this show impact us so? To say that we've never seen a show quite like this is an understatement. It was raw. honest, and unapologetic. If there's one thing we believe that is true of all who watch and love this show, is that QAF leaves itself wide open to so many interpretations, and all those interpretations are based not only on what we see on the show, but who we are and how we've experienced the world. It's the main reason why QAF is so obsessive. Much is left to our imagination and we have to use our own experiences to fill in the blanks....so QAF often is a different story to each person who view it.

We love this fandom as well. Each of us have learned from it, made friendships from it, and contributed to it. But never forget this simple truth. This fandom doesn't belong to any one person or group. It belongs to all of us who wish to play. While we might not like a particular person or their view, we simply remind ourselves that there is room for everyone. Because this is the core message of this show that brought us all together: To accept and embrace diversity, tolerance, respect, community and friendship or the queer that is us folk.

Michael said from the very beginning that it's all about sex. He was
partially right, he did not understand the full picture. He was a boy then. After he became a man, he had a shift in perspective. In the end he found that everything was not all about sex, but about relationships and what truly makes a family,....people are like snowflakes, everyone is unique. But being different is what makes everyone the same, makes them all family.

One of the elements that was so very refreshing about Queer as Folk was the honest and loving friendship between Brian and Michael. Oh, it was dysfunctional, make no mistake. But what we saw, time and timeagain, was that when it really mattered, they were there for each other. And when it came to Brian's family, Michael was always there to pick up the pieces. Some things need little explanation, like the love between two friends who gave each other shelter and understanding. Shelter from bullies either in the form of school toughs, or an abusive parent. A haven where a slap on the face did not mean a bruise, but eat up and do your homework. Brian and Michael gave each other strength when they needed it. Brian telling Michael that he would be a good father, because he had raised him. Michael, making sure that Brian faced himself, more than once, to stand up and be accountable.

Brian and Michael, there to pull each other's plug because they knew each other, when it was time to hang on and when it was time to let go. The Brian and Mikey show lets us see two boyhood friends become brothers and then men who stood by each other and for each other, sometimes raging at each other, but always finding their way back to their core of unconditional acceptance.
